Family Fun

The last two days have been a lot of fun for the girls.  We have spent large chunks of time outside each day and then come in to relax with homemade hot chocolate and rainbow looming.  I say homemade because Glenn found an instant chocolate recipe and whipped it up before Christmas.  He melted semi-sweet chocolate and mixed it with cream and then when it cooled he cut it into squares.  You just plop some in milk, nuke, stir and deliciousness!!  As for the rainbow looming, Elspeth is working hard to  figure out how to loom a simple bracelet.  It is a bit beyond her but she really wants it.  Katrine got a pattern book for Christmas and was able to bead a bracelet and make her heart’s desire – a starburst bracelet.

The fact that her uncle and aunt got her glow in the dark elastics sweetened the deal because said bracelet also glows in the dark.  Katrine has also been enjoying using her new foot spa.  Now I love a good foot soak as much as anyone but this new spa is a bit much for me.  To me it feels…ugh but then it is not mine so I don’t have to like it.

Katrine had a lot of fun being an engine for Elspeth.

This is what Katrine did when she got bored.

Near our trail there is a soccer field with a lovely nice slope.  They started using a sled but…well…who needs a sled when you have a butt or belly covered with a snow suit?  Apparently that is just as good.

Here is the new foot spa.

Halloween Skating

Here is your first set of Halloween photos.  On Monday, Katrine celebrated Halloween at skating.  With us getting home late and me forgetting to have her put it on her to do list, all that was dug up on Monday morning was a pair of devil’s horns in the dress up box.  Well her coach came to the rescue with these cute ladybug accesories.  Katrine had a lot of fun and came home the proud owner of clapper hands (yeah, not candy!!).

Elspeth’s Halloween skate was this evening.  She was super excited to wear her penguin (also known as Mimi which I still don’t understand) costume.  She thought it was fun that her coach was dressed up as a piece of bread and jam.  “Like a snack.”

Even pretended to eat her.

Thanksgiving Birthday Weekend

Yup, we combined many fun things this weekend.  It was busy and lots of fun.

We started the weekend with some leaf fun.  It is really nice that my parents get so many leaves at their house because we don’t have that many at our place.  Plus my parents got free labour as the kids raked and raked…of course all of it was for nothing after they started jumping into their pile.  Fun!

That evening was our family Thanksgiving dinner.  Mmmm, turkey and all the fixings meant full tummies.  The next day we took the kids to the Marsh so that they could work off the previous evening’s dinner as well as work up an appetite for more food.  You see, October is a double birthday month for our family with Elspeth turning 4 and my sister in law 40.  We finished the weekend with dinner with Glenn’s brother and sister in law where there was more cake and a brand new calico house which is being used with the new sweetie cart, train and rowboat also received over the past few days.

Here is how the sugar shack looks without all of the snow.

More leaf time and some net fishing with her uncle.  All any of the kids caught was weeds.

Pre-dinner gifts.

My mom had made up some adorable cupcakes.  Coupled with the 4 candle we had one delighted kidlet on our hands.
Okay,  random cuteness to end it all.

Elspeth made a Thankful tree at After School Care.  Apparently she is thankful for us and candy. (Hence the sweetie cart for her calicos)

Plus, Katrine landed her double toe which meant a trip out for frozen yogurt.

First Swimming Badge & a Seminar

I recently took advantage of the sunny weather to introduce our youngest to the joys of washing a car.  Once that car was cleanish (I am too short to wash the roof), she insisted on washing the bikes and scooters.  What a girl!

Tonight she got her first swimming badge!! She was beyond excited.  “I listened and tried hard.  I got my badge.”  A great way to end her summer on a high note.

This past weekend Katrine was lucky to have the opportunity to attend a seminar put on by Skate Ontario.  She learned alot and had a great time doing so.  The seminar was ended with a dinner for the skaters, coaches and parents.  As you can see, she had a wonderful time at the dinner inspite of being quite tired from 8 hours of working out.  What a girl.

Too much excitement for a competition

The best part of the weekend was watching Katrine skate at Summer sizzle.  She landed her axels, met her goal of finishing ontime and walked off the ice with a smile on her face.  To make that better, my parents and brother and his family were there to watch her.  I must say that the dress also looked okay.  To top it off she placed 6th (had a slip up in the final seconds of her performance on the loop jump).  Not bad considering the morning we had had before making it to the arena.

Glenn and I decided that we should stay over night at a hotel to avoid leaving home early.  That way Katrine could have maximum sleep as well as time for a hot breakfast.  Help her to be at her best.  Sounds like a great plan.  Unfortunately it didn’t work that way.

At 5 am we were awoken to a ponding on the door…well it was actually the door of the hotel room that ajoined out room.  “Police, open the door.”  In my groggy state I am like what the hell.  So I go to open the door where I saw a police officer standing shaking her head at me like “Nope lady, wrong door.”  Pounding continues as I close the door.  “Come out now with your hands up.” (The actual dialogue might be off due to tiredness)  I am walking back to the bed when it dawns on me that there are cops outside our room with guns and a guy refusing to open a door next to us as well as a set of doors between our two rooms.  Elspeth is scooped up from her sleeping bag at the foot of our bed near said door and into bed with Glenn she goes while I head to Katrine.

By this point the canine unit is joining in.  Now that was cool to hear.  I mean, the dog was sooo well trained.  He barked on a simple command and it had Katrine shaking in her bed.  Anyways, more yelling, call for back up, some guys voice next door.  Aparrently, he had to put his pants on before he could open the door.  Door opening.  More calls for lady to exit room.  Yelling between lady and guy in hall over who had called the cops.  We hear robbery, drugs, adbudtion and are left wondering who the hell we had been sleeping beside all night.

Anyways, it was all over between 5:30 and 6:00.  The yelling stopped.  Barking stopped.  Then we had one girl confused as to where the dog had gone and why she had to go back to sleep when the sun was coming up to play while the other one was working on stopping crying in the other bed.  Glenn was trying to convince Elspeth that it was most certainly not time to sleep while I was trying to neither cry nor laugh.  No one was truly rested when we headed down for breakfast at 7:00 am.  On our way back from breakfast the cops were still there carrying bags from the room.

We were suppose to spend the day with the family but not one of us has the energy.  So, we packed up the car after lunch and headed home.  And that was the excitement of Katrine’s first competition of the season.

The Next Skating Dress

It is done.  My back is aching.  Neck sore.  Almost cried a few times but eventually got the hang of it…more or less.  But before I show you the dress, let me tantilize you with photos of the blinged up jean jackets I also did for the girls with the extra crystals which came in the muli colour packets.

Elspeth’s.  I wonder if I should add more?  But my back is really sore from bending over.

Katrine’s is sufficiently sparkly I think.

Okay, do you recall what Katrine’s dress looked like before?  No?  Here is a reminder.

Here is the process.  Plan out design.  Buy crystals.  Curse self for not buying enough.  Buy more (as well as dinosaur feet for Elspeth which are like buckets you walk on).  Set up workspace.  Cut out design to ensure accuracy for gluing.  Throw out design once it begins to fall apart and recreate design.  Sigh, why did we opt for me to do this?  Oh ya, a cross between saving money and making a contribution to Katrine’s skating.

What is was suppose to look like.

Now for the After.  After two nights of work, countless crystals going flinging across the floor in various stages of gluiness, multiple swear words and a great big headache. Voila!

And let me finish with some random skating cuteness.

Exciting accomplishements to start the month!

Elspeth has been scared of going up inside of indoor playgrounds.  We recently went to two of these places in one weekend.  I must admit that I was a bit nervous going in that it would become a cling – on weekend instead of one full of play.  I was delighted when Elspeth allowed herself to be led into the bowels of the playground.  At first it had to be Baba or her sister (Did I mention that they are both awesome?)  but then friends were okay and then she actually tried it out by herself!!!  So very proud of her.

Katrine got to get yogurt again today and it is all the fault of her coaches. (Yes, I blame them.  They are simply too good at what they do!)  She landed her double salchow and immediately started signing to me that it was to be a frozen yogurt night.  Only this time it had to include her coaches too.  Proud of her too.

The girls meet some skaters

The past few weeks the girls have been very excited to be able to spend some time with the members of the chinese national figure skating team.  Granted this time has been made a bit more difficult as a result of our lack of chinese language skills (thank goodness for translation software)…I suppose this offers support for the stay in chinese class arguement but that is another post.  That said, they have said hello, watched them skate, laughed, smiled and interacted in a way which made them feel special.  Elspeth calls them her “friends” while Katrine beams when she was asked to print her name in chinese characters or when one of the coaches thanked her for the good luck card that the girls made.

My take on this?  What a wonderful opportunity for the pair of them to interact with chinese skaters.  Yes, we have chinese skaters in Canada.  Yes, they are wonderfully talented.  No, I do not mean to detract from this talent in any way shape or form.  It is so very important for our girls to have chinese role models – both Canadian born chinese, chines immigrants and mainland chinese.  We have asian friends so I can attest to the fact that they have ample interaction with smart, capable and dare I say wonderful asian women (I am a bit biased because these ladies are my friends) to draw inspiration from when they seek to define what a chinese woman should be.  With my degree in asian studies, they also have access to a sizable collection of texts on chinese history, culture, food, etc.  Then you can add to that various experiences with chineseness provided by culture camp, china town, homeland tours, reunions, kungfu, etc.

Being skaters (Katrine certainly is and it does seem as if Elspeth is leaning in that direction), they also need atheletic role models.  All of their current coaches are fabulous.  They model creativity, passion, dedication and hard work…but they are all caucasian.  With this being such a large part of our family life, we have encouraged Katrine’s love of Patrick Chan as a model because it combines the image of chineseness with the qualities of hard work, dedication and success.  Meeting and spending time with the chinese skaters has expanded the available concept of role models.  Instead of just pointing to Patrick Chan, Katrine has asked to watch videos of other chinese skaters and wherefore goeth her sister, goeth Elspeth.

So, thank you to all of the chinese skaters who have spent time with my girls over the past few weeks.  Thank you for opening their eyes further to the possibilities available for chinese skaters.  Thank you for showing them hard work, focus and dedication.  I am not sure if either of my girls will go as far as you have with their skating but hopefully they will take the qualities you have shown and apply them not only to their skating but their lives.

Good luck to Li Zijun and Zhang Kexin

Good luck to Song Nan and Yan Han.

Good luck to Peng Cheng and her partner Hao Zhang.

We will be watching for all of you at next seasons international competitions.  Of course we want the Canadians to place first but it would be awesome if you came in second.

A busy spring day in our house

The day started off with….what else? Skating.  It was Katrine’s last competition of the season.  She skated her solo the best she has thus far this season and she is very proud of herself.  It has been a rough season and I have to say that I am glad it is drawing to a close.  We are keeping our fingers crossed that the high points of a well skated solo and a newly acquired axel are pointing to a better season to come.  That is not to say that this season has not had its positives because it has.  Katrine has landed all of her single jumps, she passed Preliminary Dance and at least the first part of Preliminary Freeskate; it is just to say that a season without some sort of health issue (last year’s scarlet fever and this year’s concussion) would be greatly appreciated.

After a lunch at the local mall, it was back home to plant a tree. On Friday, Katrine brought home a sapling from school as part of the Stewards of the Earth program.  We were asked to plant said sapling and take photos.  Apparently, the class which returns that most photos of saplings being planted will get to meet the mayor.  This was an exciting prospect so plant we did.

And yes, that is a little wall around the sapling which the girls built.  And, being girls, the sapling has a name – ThornyBushTree (or some such thing).

A delicious steak dinner was followed by a family nature walk.  The girls watched frogs and birds…

…and then had the requist “sword” fight.  Gotta love my girls.

Cherish the small things

Sometimes in the midst of horrible news we are reminded to cheish the small stuff.  Today provided just such an opportunity.  Katrine finally landed her axel.  A very big deal for our girl as she has been working towards it for quite a while.  We chose to celebrate with a family outing for frozen yogurt with multiple toppings.  A time to laugh and smile together while marking a success brought about by hard work.  To the families affected by this newest batch of horror, my heart goes out to you.  To the rest of us, let us remember to treasure the time we have with our families even more.
